The Super Bowl was streamed online for people to watch for free for the second time this year. Last year NBC made history by streaming the Super Bowl online for the first time, but CBS is offering some new bells and whistles to make it exciting. CBS lets you choose from 5 cameras at anytime so you can watch exactly what you want to. Like NBC’s player in 2012, you can rewind the video to re-watch the best plays. CBS also integrated commercials into the player this year so you can choose which ones you’d like to watch, as well as a tab of the latest tweets so that you can follow the commentary. Netflix 1-Month Free Trial in Conjunction with the Launch of House of Cards

Netflix has launched its new original series House of Cards today. This show is only available on Netflix, and it stars Kevin Spacey, Robin Wright, and is directed by David Fincher (of The Social Network and Seven fame). If you sign up for Netflix now to watch the show, you get immediate access to the entire first season of the show. There’s no waiting each week for a new episode, so if you need to find out what happens next you can. Instant gratification. There are 13 episodes available, varying in length from 46 to 56 minutes. This is the second original series that Netflix is launching, the first having been almost a year ago. In 2013 though, Netflix will be launching a lot of other original content, including the highly anticipated 4th season of Arrested Development on May 4, 2013.

Watch Episodes of Showtime’s TV Series Online for Free

To watch entire series of TV shows on Showtime from past seasons, the best online sources is probably Netflix. However, you have to pay for the Netflix subscription, and you have to wait a long time after the episodes air on TV for them to make it to Netflix. There’s no great solution to this problem yet, but Showtime has been putting the first episodes (the season premieres) of their TV shows online for free shortly after the original air date so you can at least watch the first episode of your favorite Showtime series online for free. Some episodes are up on YouTube, while others are only up on Showtime’s website. Here are the links to the two sources of free Showtime season premieres:

Showtime has put the season 2 premiere episode of The Borgias (The Borgias s02e01) up on their website so that you can watch the season 2 premiere of The Borgias for free online… legally. Showtime has given away the first episode of its shows for free in the past; they’ve put the first episode of Dexter online for free along with the first episode of most of their current series as well. It’s only the first episode for free, but it’s something, especially since it’s hard to get shows from HBO or Showtime any other way until well after the season is over. One day maybe they’ll offer an online subscription service, but for now you can at least watch episode 1 of The Borgias from season 2 online for free (embedded below).

The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) published a great article by Kevin Sintumuang, an editor at GQ.com, about his first year after canceling cable. He talks about what services he uses to replace cable, as well as what he misses about cable. He doesn’t regret his decision to cancel cable, and reading this will give a boost of confidence to anyone contemplating cutting the cord.
